Things to Ponder
What were the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah?
Why did Lot offer his daughters to the men of Sodom?
What were the consequences of Lot’s daughters actions?
What were the consequences of Sarah offering Hagar to Abraham when she doubted God?
From Yesterday
Why did Sarai offer Hagar to Abram? – It had been 10 years since God promised Abram that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in Heaven but Sarai had still not bore a child. So Sarai followed the customs of the day and offered her maid servant to father a child for Abram.
More about Ishmael tomorrow!
Did Abraham get God to change his mind regarding Sodom and Gomorrah? – I must admit that upon my first reading of this scripture I was perplexed. I had been taught that God is the same, never changing, yet it appeared that Abram negotiated a ceasefire with the Lord concerning Sodom and Gomorrah. In a careful reading of the exchange between God and Abram, the Lord does not tell Abram he is going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah immediately, He says “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.” The important message here is God is consistent, what God declares is a sin, is always a sin. However, God does change his Judgement on people based on their reactions to His gentle nudges. If we repent the Lord forgives us, if our actions show our repentance is genuine than His response is to bless us. In Sodom and Gomorrah’s case their was no repentance and judgement came… The End!!
Our Heavenly Father, if there is someone reading these scriptures and shows genuine repentance and seeks forgiveness we ask the you bless them and comfort them. In you Son’s name we pray AMEN
